Who on earth is Dominic Murphy? And what the hell is up to?

Dominic Murphy is a British surrealist and watercolor painter based in Hertfordshire whose work blends dark fantasy, symbolism, tarot imagery, political satire, and literary themes. He studied Fine Art Painting at St Martin's School of Art and is especially known for his haunting reinterpretations of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland imagery.

His style mixes influences from Francis Bacon, surrealism, gothic illustration, and English watercolor traditions. Murphy himself once said that seeing Bacon’s work “ruined his life” because it pushed him toward a darker artistic path.

A few major themes in his work:

  • Tarot and occult symbolism
  • Alchemy and psychological “soul maps”
  • Alice in Wonderland characters
  • Political and social satire
  • Bull Terrier imagery, especially English Bull Terriers
  • Grotesque humor mixed with melancholy

His Alice paintings are particularly famous among fans of darker Wonderland art. Instead of the bright Victorian fantasy style, Murphy paints Wonderland as unsettling, dreamlike, surreal, and psychological — full of distorted faces, eerie tea parties, skeletal creatures, and emotionally charged characters.

He also created tarot-related works under projects like “LostTarot” and developed an Alice in Wonderland Tarot concept, including Major Arcana inspired by Wonderland characters.

On the political side, Murphy produced anti-Vladimir Putin artworks during the Ukraine war period, including satirical and grotesque paintings such as “Putin’s Centipede” and even a notorious mixed-media protest piece called “Poo-tin’s a shit.” Proceeds supported Ukrainian refugees.

The English Bull Terrier appears repeatedly in his work almost like a symbolic companion animal — loyal, comic, stubborn, slightly absurd, but emotionally expressive. In interviews and profiles, he lists Bull Terriers alongside fairy tales and Wonderland as recurring personal obsessions.

He recently has been quoted as saying  " it is a very good time to invest in my work, my time is running out...Winter Is Coming!"
